Reviews of Server Browsers

QTracker
Setup - Easy.  Very simple, and the layout can be adjusted to your liking.
Scanning for Servers - Fast, and very accurate.
Friend Support/Lookup - You manually add friends names to the list.  If they do not use the name you specify, you will not find them.   I've yet to try this, or get it to work.
Other - This has become my main tool for Quake3 at the moment as it scans servers quickly and generates an accurate list.   Thanks to Marky/DeaThAnGel for the referral.
Overall Rating - 9.5/10

Game Server Client (v2.00 Build 3013)

Setup - Easy.  You MUST register with GSC to use this program.
Scanning for Servers - FAST !!!  This program is your best bet to find Quake3 servers very fast, and pretty damn accurately.
Friend Support/Lookup - Every friend will need to be using GCS to be able to see them in game.  If they are using it, you shoul (in theory) be able to see them regardless of tag/name they use ingame.
Other - I like this program a lot.  I've yet to be able to see friends ingame yet, but it's still in beta for this version and I'm sure it should/will work soon.  This program alson integrates with GameTracker.com website.
Overall Rating - 9 / 10

Game Server Browser (v1.1.2.307)
Setup - Easy at first.  You will want to setup some filters for games, and add names into your buddy list.  No registraion required.
Scanning for Servers - SLOW !!!  Does not find all the servers it should find
Friend Support/Lookup - Manually add any friend by tag/name they use ingame.  This will not track the person if they change to a name you do not have in your list
Other - I really liked this program at first, as I used it more, the server browsing/rescanning was just too slow and inaccurate.
Overall Rating - 8 / 10

X-Fire

Setup - Easy.  You have to create an account with X-Fire.
Scanning for Servers - Pretty decent, and fairly quick.  Filtering of servers in Quake3 is pretty bad.
Friend Support/Lookup - Each person must register with X-Fire, and be using it while gaming.  It works great.
Other - X-Fire is very nice.  I should use it more, and I'm not sure why I don't.  It also will show voice servers that your friends are on (ie: Teamspeak and Ventrilo).  It is probably the best game server client out there.
Overall Rating - 8 / 10

HLSW v1.3.1
Setup -  Difficult.  Must manually add every server you want to view.
Scanning for Servers - NONE.   There is no Quake3 servers scanning from ID's master servers.  However, if you use another tool to grab the IP/Port and paste them into HLSW they scan/refresh great.
Friend Support/Lookup - Buddies can be added if each person is using HLSW (must be using it while gaming).   And this does work very well, regardless of tag/name in game.
Other - Most of you won't use this program as it is a little more tedious, but it is a pretty nice little program.
Overall Rating - 7 / 10

Game Tracker
Game Tracker is just a website based search, pretty lousy one really.  You can't filter any results to speak of.  I consider it a last resort really.

Final Thoughs

I use HLSW and GSC.  I grab my servers from GSC and paste them into HLSW.  It takes a little time, but it's worth it in the long run to me.  HLSW is fast and I can rcon servers in it.  It show's a ping graph so you can see how stable your connection is over time.  In HLSW I can also set it to report my game status to Miranda, ICQ, MSN, AIM, and Trillian.  It will update all of them at once, it's pretty slick.

X-Fire is has a huge community, and is probably the best choice for most all of you.  You can get it to report to IRC with a plugin, but there is no game reports to IM clients that I'm aware of.

So yeah, ASE is dead, at least there are some decent alternatives to find game servers :)
